Around the River
'Around the River' explores the concept of psychological separation, inspired by an analogy from Ruby’s therapist: Two people by the same river; one remains still while the other begins to swim. Though both eventually return to the same point, the swimmer would've gained a profoundly different life experience. The metaphor reflects how temporarily distancing yourself from your past can offer a healthier perspective, which might allow for a more compassionate reconnection when you reflect on your past.
Healing takes time.
The sculpture took shape from the map view of Ruby's childhood hometown and a nearby river. Inspired by stained glass art, she developed a technique to encase handwritten text and painted imagery within paper-thin Parian porcelain sculptures. The encased graphics will appear faint and blurry at first glance, but will reveal their vibrancy as the light shines through the semi-transparent clay. Interweaving storytelling with the materiality of clay, 'Around the River' encourages viewers to take a moment to be gentle with themselves and their healing journey, no matter how long it takes.
